Steve wakes up slowly, happy and warm and content enough he's not sure where he is at first. The clues he gets initially aren't helpful because they're such universal parts of his life, as far as his hindbrain is concerned, that they're just a part of 'how he should wake up'.

There's a warm body up against him, deep brown hair pressed up against his nose and mouth that smells like home, a ratty old mattress beneath him that's too firm for anyone but someone like him--

And a metal arm across his stomach. Huh. That shakes some things loose.

It doesn't halt the grin on his face, though. That's... probably never going away, or at least it won't be budging anytime soon (probably until Jim looks at him, disgusted, and tells him to 'stop lookin' like a loon'). Instead, he just reaches over to grab his phone from the the bedside table (amazing the things that survive a plain crash when they're kept in the right pocket) and peers at the time.

Huh. Nearly two. That's fair. But--

"Hey, sleepyhead. You get some good rest?"

The shelves took his attention as he trailed behind, absently taking in the displays - now and then prodding at something as he walked past. All these things for needs he hadn't even imagined before he'd suddenly found seventy years had passed. They'd made do with cotton balls and scraps of cloth, boiled water and harsh soap. Sometimes a dash of whiskey if they couldn't find anything else. And now there were pads and bandages and ointments and creams, alcohol that he knew better than to even think about drinking.

He picked a box up at random and started reading before shaking his head and putting it back. "Is there anything this stuff doesn't cure?"

"Probably doesn't 'cure' any of it," he said cynically. "Just keeps it at bay, same as always. Can't sell something if it works too well, after all."

He picked up a hand basket and tossed in a Benedryl lotion, Calomine, and something that said it was good for 'redness and irritation'.

"We'll see if any of these do the trick and go from there, I figure."

He looked them over and then, with a shrug, dropped in the one he'd put back. Cortizone. If nothing else, they could give it a test. "Now let's go take a look at the fun stuff. The candy and the crap they sell on TV at four AM."

"This should be fun," and he looks over sideways to smile at Jim, "I haven't really looked into it. Mostly, I was pilfering every local bakery I could find."

"Y'know, if we ask nicely, I bet we could get Clark to go for bagels." But he led Steve into the candy aisle, which was full of everything from hard candies (butterscotch, peppermint, wintergreen, strawberry and more), gummies, and more varities of chocolate than he'd ever imagined. "Amazing, isn't it?"

"And by nicely, you mean absently mention it and we'll find them there the next morning because he's too sweet by half," Steve said, his voice drifting off as he started looking at the giant assortment of candies.

"...well, the butterscotch is coming home with us. That's a given."

"I heard there are some candy stores now that have miles of aisles of nothing but candy. Think we might have to make a trip?" But he plucked a bag of butterscotch candies off a hanger to put in the basket. "Get some saltwater taffy off the boardwalk while we're up at Coney Island...?"

"Absolutely," though he grabbed a couple of Hershey bars from the display. He pointed to the gummi bears.

"...have you tried these yet?"

Jim shook his head but looked at them closely. "No. That looks... Well. It looks weird."

He grabbed a couple bags of the various types.

"We should try it out. Live wild."

He grinned over at Jim.

"Gotta let Diana try it at least."

Jim chuckled. "Fine with me. There's this one kind of chocolate that Clark has, but I don't think they have it here, so let's see..."

There were all sorts. With caramel to peanuts to peanut butter. Jim picked up one that had raspberry in it, and after a shrug, dropped it into the basket as well.

He looked around before--

"Junior Mints! They still make 'em. And Jolly Ranchers. Huh."

A bag of each was added.

"Candy doesn't much go out of style. Just gets smaller," Jim said, for all he added a couple of purple-wrapped candy bars. "There's a place 'round the outside of town that has a lot of old style candy for pretty cheap, but if we were gonna go there, I'd say we should get a taxi or something. I'm still working on getting my driving license."

"I've got mine, if we wanted to get a second car. Usually, I just use my bike, though."

He glanced back to see if the stationary items were where they usually were to be found and slipped past Jim to grab a sketchbook, a pack of pencils, and a sharpener. After a second thought, he grabbed a pack of colored pencils.

Then his eyes went to the soap and haircare aisles.

"...you used to all the options yet?"

Trailing behind, Jim did his usual poking and prodding as he found things. "No. I was usin' bar soap for a long time 'til I decided to actually try some of these things. ...And did you forget I told Lois to bring you some sketchbooks and pencils?" he teased, but picked up a bottle with an apple on the side and took a sniff.

"Didn't forget," and he leaned over to sniff at the bottle himself before pulling back. "Just don't know when they'll be back and my fingers are itching already."

Then he picked up a pack of Ivory bars.

"Can't go wrong with this, I figure."

He peered around to take a look at the shampoo and conditioner bottles before grabbing the the cheapest one near the corner of one of each.

"I use one of those both-in-one-bottle things." It was just easier than two steps - made more sense to him. "You can use my toothpaste. Just gotta get your own brush."

And maybe it was slightly sneaky, but he put his hand at the center of Steve's back, just for a moment.

Jim could probably feel some of the semi-manic energy settle at the touch, the muscles relax, his shoulders visibly sink at the touch.

"Yeah, I think those are in the next aisle over."

Feeling Steve react, he repeated the gesture, this time rubbing up and down, even tugging Steve just slightly closer while they were in relative private. Enough for his chest to touch Steve's arm. "Take it easy," he murmured.

His eyes dropped a little and he stilled further.

"I'm all right" he said, voice low. "Promise."

He gave Jim a crooked smile.

"Just... excited. Happy."

"Everything's okay, Stevie." His thumb made little strokes against Steve's back. "Back where you should be."

The smile was a little brittle even as he nodded.

"Yeah. Guess I just... never thought I'd be there again."

"I... didn't think I would, either," Jim exhaled, but then he nudged him on - slow, gentle, but not trusting this conversation to these surroundings.

He nodded and headed down towards the toothbrushes, grabbing one and tossing it in the bin.

"Anything else we needed?"

"Milkshakes," he said. "Then we can head to the sports place and the secondhand store. Unless you wanna find an art store somewhere in the middle."
