The Metropolis Not!Vengers in... Location, location, location!

Steve wakes up slowly, happy and warm and content enough he's not sure where he is at first. The clues he gets initially aren't helpful because they're such universal parts of his life, as far as his hindbrain is concerned, that they're just a part of 'how he should wake up'.

There's a warm body up against him, deep brown hair pressed up against his nose and mouth that smells like home, a ratty old mattress beneath him that's too firm for anyone but someone like him--

And a metal arm across his stomach. Huh. That shakes some things loose.

It doesn't halt the grin on his face, though. That's... probably never going away, or at least it won't be budging anytime soon (probably until Jim looks at him, disgusted, and tells him to 'stop lookin' like a loon'). Instead, he just reaches over to grab his phone from the the bedside table (amazing the things that survive a plain crash when they're kept in the right pocket) and peers at the time.

Huh. Nearly two. That's fair. But--

"Hey, sleepyhead. You get some good rest?"

He snorted.

"Irish temper. What am I gonna do, eh?" and he nudged Jim's foot in return.

"Nah, when Lois calls him Smallville, I know what she means. Dumb luck itself that you managed to stumble on him out of everyone in the whole wide world."

He laughed. "Other way around, actually. I was in a bus shelter and he stumbled into me. Literally. It was raining like hell, he ran into me. I was still... not doing so great, but I managed not to growl at him too much. I was on my way to a mission to get a meal and he was on his way there to investigate some thefts. I ended up having to teach him how to look homeless."

That got a sideways look and a bit of a laugh of his own.

"Even then..." it was said with some wonder, "you know, Rogers, I think you might have a soft spot in there for folks trying to make a difference."

"Might have," he smiled. "Part of it was that he wouldn't leave me alone - but part of it was that I didn't want the sisters at the mission to be stolen from, so..." Jim shrugged, unwrapping the chocolate bar. "Here, try this. Got one out of curiosity a while back - I like it for a treat sometimes. Little more expensive than Hershey's."

He blinked and looked down at the bar thoughtfully before opening it up and taking a bite. His eyebrows bounced and a happy noise slipped out of him before he took another one and continued crunching merrily.

"That is... definitely better than the Hershey's, yeah."

"It's English," he said. "Cadbury's. But it's damn good." He broke off a square of his own, putting it in his mouth and then drinking a good-sized mouthful of his milkshake. Now that was lovely.

Steve went back and forth a few times before sighing contentedly.

"You know what one advantage of all this is that I never realized?"

He tapped his temple.

"No ice cream headache."

"...Y'know I hadn't even noticed?" But Steve was right. He wasn't getting an ice cream headache. That was pretty amazing.

"Super soldiers indeed," Steve said in a mock Captain America voice that was utterly ruined by the smirk on his face.

"Genetically altered and we use it to eat all the candy and ice cream we want. Steve, I'm pretty sure we just proved we're overgrown six year olds."

"Amen to that," he said before taking a long sip of his milkshake.

Jim chuckled, but contentedly sipped at his lemon shake, adding chocolate now and then for the contrast. He was happy. He'd been happy before, but somehow, he was even happier now.

Most subtle than he usually was, Steve had pulled one of the bags open and had pulled out a pencil and the sketchbook. One hand occasionally bringing the straw to his lips, Steve took a few moments to christen the first page as he'd always started a sketchbook: with a quick sketch of his best friend in the world.

He saw out of the corner of his eye - but all it did was make him smile. So much was still just like he remembered, and for those minutes, it was like their table was on an island all its own. He could almost forget that they were in public - which is why his hand came to rest on Steve's leg so casually.

Steve didn't stir or fret. The only reaction was a little smile just visible at the corner of his lips as he filled in a few shadows and lines of Jim's hair.

They really were, he decided, going to need to run back to the apartment. Privacy wasn't a guarantee out here, and he really did want to kiss Steve again. "Let me know when you're ready to start walking," he said instead. "No rush."

"Just a couple more seconds," he said, finishing up a couple more lines before closing it and slipping the pencil into the coil. The sketchbook was then tossed into the bag again.

"Ready to go," and the chocolate bar, carefully wrapped, was tossed in as well.

"Shirts and then we're going home."

"You need pants more than shirts. Clark volunteered a bunch of shirts. But first a sleeve to replace the one I screwed up." He stood, though, patting Steve's leg as he did.

Steve stood up as well.

"Do you know what he means by 'designs' on the front? I mean, this is pretty plain," and he patted his chest where an astronaut was walking across with a boom box on one shoulder, "and I can't really think of Clark wearing anything too wild, but he did say he couldn't wear them out."

"Yeeeah..." Jim laughed, sipping at his milkshake - he wasn't done with it yet but there were trash cans along the street he could drop the cup into when he was done. "His mom has a thing for buying him space and alien T-shirts."

Steve's was gone but he took the time to toss his cup.

"Isn't that just a little perverse?" he asked with a little laugh.

"I think it's one of those family jokes. And hey, if it makes 'em smile..." He shrugged, then said more quietly, "And she's really nice, too. Clark's mom. Her name's Martha. She's a really sweet lady."

"I'm sure she'd have to be, the way he talks about her. You met her yet?"

Jim shook his head, eyes half-focused on the sidewalk in front of him. "No, not in person. Talked to her on the phone, though, and she's... Well, I promised to go with Clark for Thanksgiving, and that I'd work on her upstairs. I guess I'm going there for Christmas, too - I'm sure she'd be fine with you coming."

"I'll have to ask before it comes up," he said absently as they walked.

"Hopefully he won't mind. And it'd be nice to do Thanksgiving. You know, at someone's house."

Like a family goes unsaid. He'd spent the last two thanksgivings trying out a couple of turkey recipes. He'd asked Kate down the hall the once if she wanted to try some. She'd declined. He knew now why that was, but it still stung a little.
