Clark and Karen | Continuation Thread

The problem with organized crime was that when a leader fell, all it did was create a power vacuum. Criminals were people as much as anyone else, and amongst them were people who wanted to climb to the top and others that desperately wanted someone to tell them what to do and how to succeed.

With the damage done by the Battle of New York and the 'war' that had been waged between the Devil of Hell's Kitchen and the now-unmasked Wilton Fisk, the field had been left ripe for the picking in more than one way and the cream of the crop of the organized crime syndicates had noticed.

Bruno Mannheim didn't even try to play the philanthropist. No, he was there for one reason and one reason only: easy pickings. And that was why it was getting increasingly dangerous out there for the uniformed crime fighters... and their non-uniformed vigilante assistants. Criminals with guns that reminded them more of the kind of weapons the Chitauri had brought with them. Criminals with allies in other towns, alibis in other places. Nasty on all levels.

Which was why Clark came home that night and headed for his laptop instead of his favorite book. It seemed this journalist was going to have some work cut out for him after all here in New York.

She knew as much, and she hated that they got this way so suddenly, but some pain was just too much to bear alone, without the aide of something suppressing it. She found the bottle, poured the shot, and drank it. Then stood there for a few minutes, just seething at herself, and everything around her. Grabbing the glass, she threw it at the floor, and turned as far away from him as she could put herself.

She just needed a few minutes alone, and was happy to see that they weren't going to argue anymore. Crawling into bed, she hid her face in the pillow, and just laid there. Trying not to think, or feel, or worry, or hurt.

He's cooking, and she is thankful that he is letting her have some space. So, she could sit there, and cry for a while, get it out of her system. Crying so long that she actually fell asleep.

She wakes up a few hours later, rolling over calling his name softly, "Clark?" Feeling around the bed, it was cold. So, Karen got up, and went out to check up on him. She felt terrible for so many different reasons, and none that she could express properly. She was angry, hurt, broken, suffering a bit with PTSD from what she did, Karen just wanted it to all go away, and there wasn't a way to make that happen.

Coming out to the living room, she spots him on the couch, walking closer, she leaned over him to grab the sofa blanket to pull over him. If he wanted to stay out here, she wouldn't wake him up.

That made her jump, he startled her so bad that her heart was hammering in her throat. She really thought he had been sleeping peacefully.

Clearing her throat, she shook her head no. "What do you think?" She asked as she finished with the blanket that she had halfway pulled on top of him when his eyes opened.

"Clark, I'm not okay, does that answer it?" She asked in a soft tone. He settled in, and she moved to sit, trying to catch her breath, and settle her heart down a bit.

"It's fine, I guess it is good for the blood," she said lamely, trying for a small joke.

She turned sideways, and sat with her knees pulled up against his chest, shins pressed against his thigh, turning in such a way that she was cocooned up against him. "Thank you, but you wouldn't have intruded."

[personal profile] investigador 2015-06-24 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm telling you, Clark. If I didn't want you to intrude, I would have told you to completely fuck off. I didn't, and doubt we would ever get that far in a fight," she said with a quiet sigh. Then she added,"the constant good angel on my shoulder can be grating, because all I want to do is to find oblivion. I know that is wrong, bad, everything in between. It's hard to get a grasp on, but I am also not asking you to change either."

She was snuggling, that was silent implication that whatever he wanted to do was a-okay.

"Sometimes there is nothing wrong with a bit of force, sometimes people can't get there on their own," she pointed out. "But if that is your way, I know there will be times we will butt heads, it'll happen," she said softly.

"No, not everyone, Clark. People are different," she said quietly.

She bobbed her head, licking over her lips a few times before she pressed them together. "Okay," she said in a shaky voice. Because she really wanted to believe that he would be there, but she would be okay if he didn't stay, because she was a train-wreck.

She followed his line of sight, and then sat back with a sigh. Turning to look at him with the smallest of smiles on her face, it wasn't an 'I'm all right' smile, but it was a smile for him. "Can we do both?"

Karen got comfortable as he put her down into the bed, and in what seemed like a flash, but it was only because he was quick, was he back in the bedroom with her food. This time she gave him a genuine smile, and nodded softly. "Thank you, for cooking, and being such a good friend," she said warmly.
