The Not Quite Justice League in... The Bee's Pleas!!!

[continued from here]

Finishing his article, clearing everything with Keith, those things took time. That was why it took a few hours before Clark was ready to make his usual call to Lois that night. He had worried that he might not make the time window that she cleared every day to talk to him and the others, but he was proud to say that he'd left himself an even half an hour as long as everything was to schedule.

After the fifth time she didn't pick up (didn't so much as text or ping him), it became clear that things were very much off schedule.

Clark made his way back to the main floor where everyone seemed to congregate and headed straight for Tony, holding up the phone to him.

"I know we're all tired and we've certainly had a long day, but... can you find out where Lois's phone is from the number here?"

In all the madness of the day, all the fighting and the close calls and the weakness brought on by the proximity of kryptonite, he'd lost track of her heartbeat. Usually, it was simple enough to pick up over the phone once again, a steady pulse that he could find his way back to once the phonecall had ended.

He couldn't hear her. He couldn't tell where she was. And she wasn't answering her phone. She always answered her phone. He didn't want to think anything was wrong, but he wasn't naive enough to discount something like this. Not after today. Not after they'd pulled out kryptonite weapons.

"You've got it," he agreed easily, and then, after checking with Diana and with utmost care, he lifted her into his arms to carry her where she wanted.

He settled Lois in and settled himself in beside her, close enough for her to lean. She'd never gone through that before. He had. In a way, Steve had. It was something he would never have wished on her. "Feelin' any better?" he asked in a murmur.
kolodnoykovki: (Around the one I loved)

[personal profile] kolodnoykovki 2015-01-04 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
"You're always gonna be safe here," he promised in a murmur. "I love you. You're my niece. You're family. I'd do anything to keep you safe."

He'd almost razed the entire building. Left it running red with blood. But for the sake of justice, he'd held back.

For Clark's sake.

Family.

Jim gave Steve a little smile, a small nod. Everything was okay - they were just going to need to help her settle back in. And that, Jim knew, was always the hard part.

He kissed her temple. "Somebody wanted cake."
kolodnoykovki: (Until the end of time)

"Speaking of in-laws," Jim mused, bringing a slice of cake over for Lois, and then getting one for himself, "what did you think of Michael? He and Martha were getting along pretty well."

"Tall. Kind of skinny," Jim elaborated. "Older and younger than me at the same time. Nice guy, though, and if he does right by Martha, he's not bad," he agreed. "Just gotta make sure he does right by her."

But he had to admit to himself, he didn't really worry about that. He was trying hard to be a good father already, and he was definitely a good person. Even his slightly-tried people skills could feel that out.

"Well," Clark said with a deep sigh, "at least my grandfather already likes him. Grandpa Clark couldn't ever much get along with Dad."

"He is very kind, very brave, and very gentle," Diana noted, "and I have no doubt that if Martha is displeased with his behavior, that she will take care of the matter as needed."
kolodnoykovki: (One by one they are falling)

"I don't doubt Martha could take care of anybody's behaviour as needed," Jim agreed with a smile. "It'll be interesting to see how that turns out, though."

Just the thought was making his smile turn into a grin.

"Your little house in Kansas is gonna be full this Thanksgiving." He smiled at the idea, though. It'd been a long time since he'd had a family Thanksgiving with more family than Steve. And now he was going to cook and help in the kitchen and have a whole family around...

God, he loved the idea.

"And it's gonna be good."
kolodnoykovki: (We are only passing through on her way)

[personal profile] kolodnoykovki 2015-01-04 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"We could rent an RV," Jim suggested. "Then there'll be room for everybody."

There was a movie to watch, cake to eat - Lois to take care of. He was feeling pretty good, all in all.

"I'm... not sure he'd land it in your field, but probably at the closest airport. Even Tony's not that selfish." In fact, Tony was better than he'd heard he used to be. If anything, Tony really had ended up being the Element of Generosity, which was...

Well, it made some jokes unfair, anyway.

All the same, Jim took another forkful of cake. "But we'll work it out."

"Closest thing Steve and I have had to a real Thanksgiving is..." He had to think back. A long way back. "Well. When it was the two of us and his mom, we did okay, but when it was just me and him..."

Steve leaned over and pecked a kiss to Jim's arm.

"The year there was an extra turkey left over unclaimed and the boss let me take it home. That was a good year. That turkey lasted us for the whole week. Sandwiches, soup... think I even made some biscuits with that turkey rolled in. We were almost sick of it by the end."

A smile.

"Almost."
kolodnoykovki: (Could have been forever)

[personal profile] kolodnoykovki 2015-01-05 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
"Hard to be sick of something when otherwise, you're eating buttered bread and pretending it's a feast," he returned, sending a smile Steve's way. He'd always done his best by Steve, tried to keep him healthy. It hadn't always worked, but he'd tried.
justakidfrombrklyn: (big happy smile)

"We used that broth till the last drop," Steve agreed with a low nod. He leaned in and let his head rest on Jim's arm for a moment. It said, without words, that yeah, he had. And they'd made it. They'd made it here.

"The poverty you mention is so disturbing to me," Diana admitted with a little huff, "especially considering some of the opulence I have seen."

Steve couldn't help but pat her leg.

"You would have gotten along with my mom. She had a lot of friends who were Communists, pretty much believed the same thing even if she didn't quite trust the whole concept all together."

"Communists?"

"I'll explain it later."

Lois looked over at the screen.

"...okay, this is Raiders of the Lost Ark so we've got a bit of time before we have to explain the villains in the Crystal Skull."
