I may or may not have suggested you as a replacement..." of course they tended to spend time together of their own accord, so it wasn't like he'd had to work too hard, but he figured the more alone time he managed to get them, the sooner they would figure out their feelings. He had expected to be privy to it when it did happen, of course, but the timing was the only part that surprised him.
