A shrug and he said, "I take care of myself. I wasn't just gonna let Stevie go without me. C'mon, which way's home for you? We'll walk with you." That was the easy way to deflect it. He'd been worse off than he was now, even if he didn't exactly have a home. He had an upper barn corner that was better than a lot of places he'd stayed. The roof didn't leak, he'd found some old blankets, and with some straw he'd stacked up, he stayed really warm. It was almost palatial compared to some places he'd stayed.
